Edzell Castle Garden (HS)
Edzell, By Brechin
A remarkable and very beautiful group of buildings with a late mediaeval tower house, incorporated into a 16th century mansion, Edzell was the seat of the Lindsays for almost 400 years. One of the family's greatest achievements was their garden built for Sir David Lindsay in about 1604. Unique in Scotland, it is surrounded by an elaborate wall with extraordinary heraldic and symbolic sculptures. The garden, restored in 1930, is laid out with triangular beds of dwarf box of intricate designs. In one corner there is a delightful little summer house. Sir David intended his garden to stimulate both mind and senses and it still does.
