Balvenie Castle (HS)
Dufftown
This formidable castle, situated in Glen Fiddich, was once the chief seat of the immensely powerful ‘Black' Comyn, earls of Buchan. The massive 13th century curtain wall of the Comyn castle, with its battlemented wall walks, still stands. The castle was later owned by the earls of Douglas. After their land was forfeited to the Crown, the king granted Balvenie to his kinsman, John Stewart, the first Earl of Atholl. The earls of Atholl held Balvenie until the 17th century. The fourth earl demolished part of the old curtain wall and built the striking renaissance lodging, 1547-1557, which today dominates the entrance. The castle was last occupied in the early 1700s.Picnic area.
