Corgarff Castle (HS)

Corgarff, Strathdon

This small castle in a remote glen has had a fascinating history. Built in the mid 16th century as a typical fortified laird's house, it was converted two centuries later into an army barracks. In November 1571, Adam Gordon, brother of the Earl of Huntly, attempted to take Corgarff. On being refused entry by Margaret Forbes, the attackers set fire to the building. Margaret, her children and servants, were burnt to death. In all about 24 people died. For some years after the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745, the Highlands were in a state of unrest and Government troops were stationed throughout the area. To accommodate these soldiers, the castles of Corgarff and Braemar were converted into barracks. It was at this time that Corgarff's distinctive star shaped defensive walls were added. The castle was used by the army until as late as 1831 with the soldiers then assisting the Customs & Excise in stopping the smuggling of illicit whisky.
