Elgin Cathedral (HS)
Elgin
Affectionately known as the ‘Lantern of the North', Elgin Cathedral is considered by many to have been Scotland's most beautiful cathedral. Built in a rich late 13th century style, the cathedral had to be substantially rebuilt after it and other buildings were burnt in 1390 by Alexander Stewart, the infamous ‘Wolf of Badenoch'.At the Reformation in 1560 the bishops moved to the parish church in the town and the cathedral, without purpose, gradually fell into disrepair. The octagonal chapterhouse, the finest in Scotland, was used as a meeting room for the incorporated trades of the burgh. As a result it has survived virtually intact.
