Mount Stuart House and Gardens
Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Mount Stuart, a spectacular Victorian Gothic House, is the magnificent architectural fantasy of the Marquess of Bute (1847 - 1900) and the Scottish architect Robert Rowland Anderson. The house sits in 300 acres of designed landscape and 18th Century woodlands established by the 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792), who advised on the foundation of Kew Gardens. These fascinating gardens include: a recently restored kitchen garden with sweeping herbacious borders and a large glass pavilion; a prominent rock garden laid out in 1890 with many special plants; and a Victorian pinetum. In order to fully enjoy the many different aspects of Mount Stuart, plan to spend the day and experience a guided tour of the house, audio-visual, adventure play area with large Doll's House, way-marked walks, café, restaurant and shop.
