One of Scotland’s first lighthouses it was completed in 1788. The location was then very remote. All materials had to be landed by boat 6 miles away and taken on horseback over the hill to the site. Today it can be reached by single track road. The former keepers’ houses have been converted into holiday cottages by the National Trust for Scotland.
