Ruthven Barracks (HS)
Ruthven, Kingussie
Ruthven is the best preserved of the four infantry barracks built by the government following the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Erected on the hill-top site of a medieval castle, the barracks were protected by a musket-looped wall and had accommodation for 120 soldiers. In 1745, Sergeant Molloy and twelve men successfully defended the barracks against a besieging army of some 200 Jacobites. He was forced to surrender the following year when the rebels returned with artillery, after which the barracks fell into ruin.
