Crossraguel Abbey (HS)
by Maybole
One of the most complete mediaeval abbeys in Scotland, Crossraguel was founded in the 13th century by Duncan of Carrick, Earl of Carrick. Badly damaged during the Wars of Independence with England, the abbey was rebuilt and enlarged during the 15th and 16th centuries.Much of the abbey church still stands and there is a particularly fine vaulted chapter-house. Here the monks once gathered to hear a reading from their rule-book and to discuss business. The most impressive buildings within the abbey grounds are the tower house residence of Abbot William Kennedy, and the strong gatehouse, both built in about 1530. Abbot William was one of a new generation of abbots nominated by the king, rather than elected by the monks themselves. He was a brother of the Earl of Cassilis.Picnic area, small display on the skills of the mediaeval masons who built the abbey.
