Drumlanrig Castle (Gardens and Country Park)
Thornhill
Ancient Douglas stronghold and home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, the castle was completed in 1691. One of the most impressive renaissance buildings in Scotland, it houses one of the finest art collections in Britain. The great Victorian gardens are being transformed to their former glory, and visitors can enjoy 40 acres of formed and unformed garden. Many of the rhododendrons have been raised from seed collected in the wild in the Himalayas and China. The country park situated at the heart of the estate has a network of waymarked walks and cycle routes. The visitor centre provides an excellent introduction to local wildlife, with live wildlife cameras capturing the action nearby. The cycle museum displays a replica of the world’s first bicycle built near Drumlanrig in 1840 by Kirkpatrick MacMillan.Guided tours of the castle, restaurant, gift shop, guided walks, adventure playground and plant centre.
