Dundrennan Abbey (HS)
Dundrennan, Kirkcudbright
The ruins of this beautiful Cistercian abbey stand in a peaceful and secluded valley. Founded in 1142 by David I, almost certainly with monks from Rievaulx in Yorkshire, Dundrennan became the mother house of two more Cistercian abbeys in Galloway: Glenluce and Sweetheart.
The abbey flourished for over 400 years until the Reformation in 1560. Even then there was no instant closure and Mary Queen of Scots was made welcome here on 15th May 1568. She was fleeing after her defeat at the Battle of Langside. This was to be her last night on Scottish soil as she left for exile in England the following morning.
The abbey church remained in use as a parish kirk until the mid 17th century. By the time the abbey was taken into care by the State in 1842, much of its stone had been quarried to build the village of Dundrennan.
