Glenluce Abbey (HS)

Newton Stewart

This Cistercian abbey, founded by Roland, Earl of Galloway in 1192, is set in a lovely tranquil valley. All too little survives, but hints of its former grandeur may be seen in the south transept of the church, in the vaulted chapterhouse, and the partially rebuilt cloisters. The chapterhouse was the most important room in the abbey after the church. It was the main meeting place where sins were confessed, punishments meted out and important business conducted.Prior to the Reformation the abbey had acquired considerable wealth, with its abbots behaving more like great landowners than spiritual leaders. In 1513 the Abbot of Glenluce, along with other churchmen, was killed at the Battle of Flodden. There is a small site museum with an exhibition and some items from the abbey, including beautifully decorated tiles and pottery.
