MacLellan's Castle (HS)
Kirkcudbright
This fine castellated house, completed in 1582, once dominated the town and harbour of Kirkcudbright. It was built by Sir Thomas MacLellan, a prominent local landowner and Provost of Kirkcudbright. Within a few years of the Reformation, Sir Thomas acquired the then ruined convent of Greyfriars situated in the middle of the town. He used the convent buildings as a quarry for stone to build his grand new town house.During the 17th century, the MacLellans incurred heavy debts, and the castle was sold. In a poor state of repair, its roof was stripped off in 1742. Nearby in Greyfriars Church is the magnificent tomb erected in memory of Sir Thomas and his wife, Grissel Maxwell, by their son Robert.
