Craigmillar Castle (HS)

Craigmillar

Craigmillar is one of the most perfectly preserved late mediaeval castles in Scotland. Built around an L-plan tower house of the early 15th century, the castle was much expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries. Mary Queen of Scots fled here after the murder in the Palace of Holyroodhouse of her secretary Rizzio. It was also at Craigmillar that the plot was hatched for the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.
