James’ Court

A fashionable address in its day it is named after its builder James Brownhill and was built about 1725. James Boswell, the lawyer and author lived here as did the philosopher David Hume. He found the court ‘very cheerful and elegant, but too small to display my great talent for cookery’. The court was badly damaged by fire and re-built in 1857.
