Political Martyrs’ Monument
This 90 foot obelisk, in the Calton Burial Ground, is sometimes known as the ‘Hamilton Obelisk’ and was erected in 1844 in memory of 5 political reformers of the late 1700s: Thomas Muir; Thomas Palmer; William Skirving; Maurice Margot and Joseph Gerrald. After a series of ‘show trials’ they were sentenced to 14 years transportation to Australia.
