St Cuthbert’s Church

One of Edinburgh’s oldest churches it has been rebuilt many times. The present church was built in 1894, but incorporates the tower and steeple of the 18th century church.

The extensive churchyard has been a place of burial for almost a thousand years. Between the 1730s and 1840s it was plagued by grave robbers who dug up and sold bodies to the university medical school. To prevent bodies being removed the cemetery wall was raised and in 1826 a watch tower, which you can still see, was built.
