Cawdor Castle

Cawdor Castle, Nairn

Cawdor Castle, one of Scotland's most outstanding stately homes, has a magical name which is romantically linked with Macbeth by Shakespeare. The medieval tower and drawbridge are still intact and generations of art lovers and scholars are responsible for the eclectic collection of paintings, tapestries, furniture and books to be found in the castle.Few Scottish castles have such superb gardens. The walled garden is the oldest, established in 1620, and was the original kitchen garden for the castle. Part of the garden is now a holly maze based on a mosaic from a ruined Roman villa in Portugal. The flower garden, laid out in 1710, has a French influence, and with its old clipped yew hedges is a delight throughout the year. The “Wild Garden” between the Castle and Cawdor Burn is a shaggy informal ramble of azaleas, rhododendrons, primulas, willows and bamboos. Nature trails, 9-hole golf course, putting green, restaurant, snack bar, picnic area and shop.
