Dryburgh Abbey (HS)
Dryburgh, Melrose
Situated on a bend on the River Tweed, Dryburgh is perhaps the most beautiful of all the Border abbeys. It was founded in 1150 by the Premonstratensians or White Canons.Demolished and rebuilt at various times, Dryburgh is still remarkably complete. It has a delightful barrel vaulted chapterhouse with low stone benches and a carved arcade. Here monks assembled for the daily reading of a chapter from their rule book. The abbey fell into disrepair before the being no novices to replace the ageing monks. Sir Walter Scott and Field Marshal Earl Haig, the First World War general, are buried there.Shop and picnic area.
