This 62,000 hectare forest with a network of walking trails, cycling and orienteering routes is the largest in Britain. The forest park centre, Kielder Castle was built in 1775 as a hunting Lodge for the Duke of Northumberland. It houses exhibitions on the forest and its wildlife together with an information centre, gift shop and licensed restaurant. The forest is a stronghold of the red squirrel and is one of the top sites in the UK for goshawks. Otters use all the main waterways through the park and roe deer are often to be seen.
