Copinsay Lighthouse
This cliff top lighthouse was built in 1915 at the request of the Admiralty to mark an approach from the north to the naval base at Scapa Flow. This isolated island off the Orkney Mainland was farmed in the 1930s by a Mr Groat. He had 13 children and there was a school and school teacher for them and the lightkeepers’ children. Uninhabited today the island is a nature reserve owned by the RSPB.
