Sule Skerry Lighthouse
This is the most isolated lighthouse in the British Isles. It was built in 1895 on Sule Skerry a 35 acre island that lies some 40 miles west of Orkney and about the same distance north of Cape Wrath. Before the days of radio an unsuccessful was made to use carrier pigeons to communicate with the keepers. The lighthouse was bombed by a German aircraft in February 1942. There was no damage or casualties.
