Barry Mill (NTS)
Barry, Carnoustie
Enjoy the sights and sounds of an early 19th-century working mill - the splash of the waterwheel, the sound and smell of grinding corn. The fascinating machinery - fanners, elevators, sieves and a sack hoist - are all still in use. Records show that a mill has occupied the site since at least 1539. The present building was rebuilt in 1814 following a fire. Barry Mill was the last water-powered meal mill to work in Angus, producing oatmeal until the late 1970s and animal feed until 1982. Now the original machinery is fully restored and turning again.Milling demonstrations normally take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and for pre-booked parties. Displays highlight the important place the mill held in the community. From the mill a delightful walkway along the lade leads to a small apple orchard and picnic area.
Opening Times
Good Friday to September, Thursday – Monday 12.00pm – 5.00pm, Sunday 1.00pm – 5.00pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
