Muness Castle (HS)

Britain’s most northerly castle, this splendid residence was built in 1598 for the notorious Laurence Bruce, brother of the Earl of Orkney. After being attacked and burned by foreign privateers in 1627, the castle never regained its former splendor. The castle was roofless by 1774.
