Barra Head Lighthouse

The highest lighthouse in Scotland, built in 1833, it sits on top of a 190m (623ft) high cliff, on the island of Berneray, the southernmost tip of the Outer Hebrides. It was intended as both a landfall light for ships crossing the Atlantic and to mark the southern end of the Minch. There is a poignant graveyard on top of the hill where two infant children of a 19th century keeper are buried. Now uninhabited the island can be reached by boat from Barra.
