Calanais Standing Stones (HS)

Isle of Lewis

This amazing group of standing stones is unique in Scotland. A major ceremonial site, it has a cross-shaped setting and circle, at the centre of which is a 12 foot high monolith. The monument was erected in about 3000 BC and continued in use until about 800 BC. An attractively designed visitor centre interprets the site and the general archaeology of the area.Shop, tea-room nearby
