Orkney Wireless Museum

Kiln Corner, Kirkwall

Orkney's wartime history is strongly represented in the museum when unbeknown to the general public an intense communications network involving radio and telephones was operating to protect the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow. A radar station was set up at Netherbutton in Orkney and equipped with top secret equipment. Items you may see in the wartime sections are transmitters used for short range speech to fighters and long range morse to bombers, replica radar equipment, original gun operations map from operations headquarters in Kirkwall, bomber transmitter and receivers, pictures, documents, and the original Scapa Flow boom defence chart.

April to September, Monday - Saturday 10.00am - 4.30pm Sunday 2.00pm - 4.30pm.
