Meigle Museum (HS)

Meigle, Blairgowrie

Meigle was the site of an important Pictish church and burial place. The magnificent collection of carved Pictish crosses and stones date from the late 8th to the late 10th centuries. They are all that remains of a centre of Pictish wealth and patronage, and they demonstrate both the skill and artistic vigour of Pictish stonecarvers. Many of the stones survived only because they were put to other uses. Some were found built into the walls of the church, others in the churchyard, and yet others in the walls of a malt kiln. In the late 19th century the stones and crosses were rescued by the local landowner, Sir George Kinloch. He bought the former village schoolhouse, now the museum, specifically to display and preserve them. Interpretative display, shop.
