Loch an Eilein

One of the treasures of Rothiemurchus, this hidden loch is surrounded by ancient Caledonian pine forests and boasts an island castle once reached by causeway.
There is a superb, easy, walk of about 3 miles around the loch. At the loch’s outflow you can see the traces of a dam. In the 18th and 19th centuries this was used to raise the level of the loch and float logs down to the River Spey.

There is a charge for the car park. At the ticket kiosk look out for red squirrels and crested tits, you can often see them at the feeding station here.
