The Oa (RSPB)

Nr Port Ellen, Isle of Islay

This peninsula, with heathland and cliffs, on the south of the island is a good place to see choughs, seabirds and the occasional golden eagle. Greenland white-fronted geese use the wet bog in winter. Twites and other finches can be seen on the farmland. From the car park a footpath leads to the impressive American Monument. It was erected in memory of the 700 American servicemen who died when the troopships Tuscania and Otranto sank off the island in 1918.
