Threave Estate (NTS)
By Castle Douglas
This area of farmland and marshes beside the River Dee is well-known for its wildfowl. In autumn and winter large flocks of grey lag and pink-footed geese, with some whooper swans, feed on the fields. The river is good for goosander, red-breasted merganser and shovellers. Kingfishers are commonly seen here.
There is an excellent network of way marked trails, with four hides overlooking the farmland, marshes and river. Visitor centre, shop, restaurant and ranger service.
