Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve (SNH)

The Links, Golspie Business Park

This shallow tidal estuary of the River Fleet offers great wildlife viewing opportunities. Waders and duck feed out on the mud at low tide and eider duck dive for mussels. In summer arctic and common terns fish the shallows and ospreys are seen regularly. In winter large numbers of wigeon graze the eelgrass on the tidal flats. There is a good footpath through the pinewood on the north shore. Here you may see Scottish crossbill, crested tit and red squirrel. The area is well-known for two species of pinewood plants, the delicate pink twin flower and the rare one flowered wintergreen. From the car park at Littleferry, once a salmon fishing station with a large ice house, there are attractive paths out through the dunes to the river mouth. Guided walks in summer.
