Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve (NTS)

By Killin

Britain's 10th highest mountain, Ben Lawers, 1214m, is well-known for its unique range of mountain plants. The soft calcareous rock creates a fertile soil that supports such rarities as the vivid alpine forget-me-not, the exquisite alpine gentian, and delicate drooping saxifrage. Spring is heralded by the striking purple saxifrage. Later pink cushions of moss campion brighten the slopes. Birds include raven, ring-ouzel, red grouse, ptarmigan, dipper and curlew. Way marked nature trail on lower slopes.
