Hermaness National Nature Reserve(SNH)

Overlooking Muckle Flugga, Britain's most northerly point, Hermaness provides a wonderful haven for over 100,000 seabirds. Some 16,000 pairs of gannets and more than 50,000 puffins come to nest each year on the dramatic sea cliffs, offshore arches and stacks. Inland, the moors are home to whimbrel, golden plover and the third largest colony of great skuas in the world. The lighthouse of Muckle Flugga, completed in 1858 was designed by Thomas Stevenson, father of author Robert Louis Stevenson. The visitor centre in the former shore station for the lighthouse provides information and a leaflet on the reserve. From here a marked trail leads out across the moors to the cliffs. Allow 3-4 hours.Best time to visit mid-May to mid-July.
