North Rona National Nature Reserve (SNH)

North east of Lewis

Uninhabited for over a 100 years this island reserve has large numbers of breeding seabirds including storm and Leach's petrels. Every autumn 8,000 grey seals come ashore to calve here. The ruins of various buildings, including a hermitage said to have been founded by St Oran in the 7th-8th century, can be seen.

Opening Times

You will need to hire a boat, well in advance, from Lewis. You are strongly advised to contact the local SNH office (01851 705258) before considering a trip as it is the most difficult of all the reserves to reach.
