This beautiful reserve on the south west end of the Island of Coll has long white shell-sand beaches, sand dunes, machair grassland and moorland. Coll is a stronghold for the rare corncrake. Present from April to September, corncrakes are easy to hear – their rasping call going on all night – but much more difficult to see. Other breeding birds include redshanks, snipe, red-throated divers, and arctic skuas. In winter there are large numbers of barnacle and Greenland white-fronted geese.
